CONTEMPORARY MUSIC

QRD 13

This piece is my first work in the field of contemporary music.

QRD 13 is musical piece for bass guitar, flute and piano. My initial idea was to use an algorithm where the numeric sequence extrapolated is applied as the basis of the construction of an acoustical diffuser.

The QRD (Quadratic Residue Diffuser) was invented by Schroeder and basically spreads sound in a room. It is a geometrical device that contains wells with different depths. I have associated each depth with a musical note and extrapolate chords from it as well as melodies. This method gave me new possibilities in terms of chord progressions and chord extensions to work with that I was used to work with and the final result is kind of exotic and mysterious musical piece.

Music Performers: Catherine Dimmock (flute), Elektra Mylopoulou (piano) and Simon Randall (bass guitar)
